50 Mile Bike ride to Howey In The Hills

08 Aug

First time in awhile that I’ve ridden solo.  Truth be told, I was kind of looking forward to the alone time with me and Zoey (my Bike).  The one downside to riding with someone, is not being able to push your limits.  I chose a nice hilly route to the city of Howey in the Hills.  This is a challenging route, with lots of steep hills (yes, Florida does have some good hills).  I thought I was going at a pretty good clip when this bike club went cruising by me.  One of the front riders had legs the size of the HULK!  Massive quads and ginormous calves.  Gotta love this sport, I get to have many humbling experiences.  Triathlon, never allows you to get too full of yourself.

I normally always travel with some cash, so I can refill my water bottles along the way.  I somehow forgot my money on the hot and humid day.  Needless to say, I was parched and dying for some hydration around mile 30.  Just when I thought I was going to overheat a torrential downpour started and saved the day.  LOL  I’m one of those weird people that love to bike, swim or run in challenging weather be it thundering rain, extreme temperatures either hot or cold.

As a side note, I have been loving my new helmet with it’s improved aerodynamics and built in visor.  It’s really nice. The visor came in handy as my eyes were protected from the downpour.
